ISLAMABAD - The Supreme Court on Thursday adjourned for indefinite period the hearing of a government petition seeking review of the court?s July 12 order amid conciliatory statements from the government and the court.
The court had directed the prime minister to write letter to Swiss authorities for reopening money laundering case against President Asif Ali Zardari.
A five-member bench led by Justice Asif Saeed Khan Khosa heard arguments from Attorney-General Irfan Qadir in support of the petition. Qadir hinted that the government wanted the matter to be resolved “once and for all”. He sought adjournment till after Eid Al Fitr to allow the government carry out consultations on the matter adding that the government wanted to implement the court’s directives.
Justice Khosa said a clear statement from the government would help resolve the issue. But, he cautioned that the bench could not postpone the hearing to a date later than August 27 when the court has summoned Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf to explain why the court order on the Swiss letter issue had not been implemented.
Earlier on Wednesday, the attorney-general had dropped a hint that Prime Minister Ashraf might not appear before it on August 27 to answer the charges of contempt.
“Had I been the prime minister I would never have come because under Article 248(1) of the constitution the prime minister is not answerable to the court,” he argued.
